Welcome to the Amazing World of Model Rockets, Space and More Rockets!
For many of us, model rockets and sport rocketry is the culmination of
all our childhood dreams and aspirations of space flight and space
adventures. Those individuals such as myself, who had desires to
become astronauts and spend a life exploring space, never quite made
the grade. But with the building and flying of our own model rockets,
we have captured some of the exhilaration of space exploration in our
own way. Welcome to my website, which is dedicated to everything I
know about rockets and space exploration.
I never did quite make it into the astronaut program, but I was able to
achieve the next best thing. I became a rocket scientist (oh, I love
that term), or more specifically, a design engineer in the solid
propulsion rocket motor industry. As well as giving you the best site to
come to for your entire model rocket needs, you will also find a
plethora of all you’ll ever want to know about rockets and their impact
on space exploration.
The sport rocketry or high power model rocket industry has grown by
leaps and bounds over the years. Model rocketeers are building bigger
and bigger rockets and pushing higher and higher altitude limits that
actually rival the professional aerospace industry. Every heard of
LDRS? Large and Dangerous Rocket Ships or LDRS for short, is an
annual amateur rocket meet that brings out the best of the best
modelers and models in the world. Hobbyists can bring model rockets
sometimes as tall as 20 feet or more reaching altitudes of 20,000 to
30,000 feet and above with these monsters. This annual meet is surely
not for the faint of heart or the light of pocket book.
But aside from these monsters, models can range in size from a few
inches tall to several feet. There is room in this sport from the “don’t
know nothing” novice to the highly educated, very experienced rocket
scientist (ha ha). There is nothing like going out to a wide open field,
setting up your launch pad and sending your first model creation to an
exhilarating altitude. Of course, you will be taking all necessary
precautionary and safety measures won’t you.
My first taste of mastering my own model rocket came at about the
age of 12 when I first discovered Estes Industries. My first kit, the
Astron Alpha, was easy to build and flew beautifully. I was hooked and
over the next few years I could be found after school with balsa wood
and glue in hand. I managed to build and fly numerous models that
Estes had available. Of course back then Estes and Centuri were the
only companies I knew about. Follow all the pages of my site and you
will discover other companies that I have deemed worthwhile enough
to include on this site.
And of course for me, rockets and space go hand in hand. If it hadn’t
been for civilization’s yearning to understand the stars and discover
what is out in space, rockets may never have been invented or at least
not used to the extent they are today. So along with model rockets I
have combine my profession experience and passions to put the most
complete website together that I know how. This site contains all kinds
of knowledge of rockets their history, their uses and space exploration,
which is the final destination for some of the various types of rockets.
And with the new emergence of the commercial space flight industry, a
more common man approach to space travel is taking place. Want to
take a ride into space yourself? That may become a very real
possibility in the next few years.
